Carey given portrait as retirement gift
A portrait depicting DJ Carey’s proudest moment in his hurling career was presented to him last night as a surprise gift to mark his retirement.
The artwork features the Kilkenny star with his two sons and the Liam McCarthy Cup after victory on All-Ireland Hurling Final day in 2003.
It was presented to him by the Dublin branch of the Kilkenny Supporters’ Club.
In 2003, Carey captained the Kilkenny team, which won back-to-back titles.
Supporters’ Club vice-chairman Eddie Nolan said Carey was a GAA icon and a perfect role model for younger players.
“DJ has been very good to us in the past and we just wanted to mark his retirement from inter-country hurling with this gift.
“It was a very proud moment for DJ and his family and I’m sure it will take pride of place wherever he puts it.”
The portrait was painted by promising Bray artist Tara Hipwell.
The Kilkenny Supporters’ Club is one of the largest in Dublin.
Carey, 37, announced his retirement from inter-country hurling in June 2006.
His remarkable career includes 10 Leinster hurling titles, five All-Irelands and nine AllStar awards.
The businessman may continue playing hurling with his Young Ireland club in Gowran.
