O'Neill on form as Clare end winning run

Longford 3-8 Offaly 1-14

Monaghan 1-17 Carlow 0-9

Roscommon 2-10 Clare 1-7

Roscommon ended Clare's winning start to the National Football League as midfielder Seamus O'Neill turned in a match of the match performance in their 2-10 to 1-7 win at Hyde Park today.

In a very entertaining game, the hulking Kilbride clubman drove the Rossies to victory after the sides had gone in at the break at 1-4 apiece.

Clare, who had maximum points from their first two outings, should have made better use of a wind advantage in the second half but John Maughan's men dug deep to see out the win.

Cathal Cregg and Ger Heneghan, whose marker Conor Whelan was sent off, both netted for Roscommon, while Rory Donnelly finished with a 1-2 tally for Paidi O'Sé's visitors.

Two late John Tiernan points helped the home side close out a morale-boosting success.

Roscommon move up to second place in the table, two points behind Monaghan who had an easy time of it in Clones today as they beat Carlow 1-17 to 0-9 for their third league win.

A Thomas Freeman goal threatened to kill off the game as the Farney men led by 1-11 to 0-3 at the break.

Monaghan had a plethora of points scorers, with Freeman being joined on the scoresheet by his brother Damien, Paul Finlay, Stephen Gollogly, Eoin Lennon, Kieran Hanratty, Dessie Moan and Colm McManus.

At Pearse Park, Longford found the net three times as they drew 3-8 to 1-14 with Offaly.

The clash between London and Leitrim was called off due to a waterlogged pitch at Ruislip.
