Wexford managerial search inches on

Pat Herbert and Eddie O'Connor may have been linked with the vacant Wexford hurling manager position, but the Wexford County Board have only interviewed one candidate so far.

Both Herbert, the former Limerick star, and O'Connor, who captained Kilkenny to All-Ireland success in 1993, are thought to be in the running to succeed Seamus Murphy in the South East.

But it looks like there will be another week or two of interviewing before there is any sign of white smoke.

County chairman Sean Quirke said: "At the outset, we discussed (the merits of) 25 to 30 people and have spoken to one man so far. Hopefully we will be interviewing a further two people this week. One of them was unavailable up to this point but he should be able to talk now.

"We will interview two or three more people after that before arriving at our decision. We agreed to prioritise the senior position first, and we will tackle the Under-21 one once that is done."

The Dublin-based Herbert, noted as a tough task master, might have the edge as he has managed in Wexford previously, taking charge of club side Oulart-the-Ballagh for a short spell.
