O'Leary to lead Cork

Seanie O’Leary is set to become the next Cork hurling manager, according to the Evening Echo.

He is a clear favourite with the bookies and informed sources close to the camp suggest that the job is his if he wants it.

His appointment would maintain continuity with this year’s successful management team and would keep four-fifths of it together in the aftermath of Donal O’Grady’s resignation last night.

Although the team that oversaw this year’s magnificent All-Ireland triumph has concluded its two years in office there is every likelihood that they would be willing to take charge again if asked by the county board.

O’Leary was an integral part of the O’Grady regime and has an impressive track record himself as a twice successful Imokilly manager in 1997 and ’98.

Cashman’s Bookmakers quote him at 4/5 to succeed, with Midleton’s Sean O’Brien second favourite at 2/1.

O’Brien would be a popular choice. He coached the Cork intermediate hurlers to All-Ireland glory in 2001 and 2003 and has had a successful innings at numerous clubs which he was been involved with including Valley Rovers and Courcey Rovers to name but two.

Meanwhile, selector Fred Sheedy told the Evening Echo today that O’Grady was an ultra professional to work alongside.

“He was the best, no doubt about it and he brought coaching to a new level.’’ he said.

“He was a great communicator, great with the players and was hugely respected by them.

“I was hoping he would stay for another year but I absolutely respect his decision.

“This man was professional in all he did and the work he has put in for Cork hurling is immense. It was a pleasure to have worked alongside him.’’
