No problem for Laois against disappointing Carlow

Laois 5-15 Carlow 1-9

Laois hurlers scored their second victory in a week as they experienced little difficulty in overcoming a disappointing Carlow side.

The size of the victory was surprising considering Carlow had shocked Meath in the opening round.

Laois, victors over Wicklow last Monday, lay the foundations for this win in the opening half with two very well taken goals from full forward Liam Tynan and Damien Culleton, who came in for dual player Darren Rooney.

At half time Laois led 2-11 to 0-5.

Carlow midfielder Pat Coady kept his side in touch with some fine points.

On the changeover Carlow looked as if they might cause an upset. After Liam Tynan had got a further Laois point, Carlow replied with a well-taken goal from full-forward Des Murphy and the same player added a point a minute later.

Pat Coady converted the 65, however that was the end of the Carlow revival.

Laois man of the match Damien Culleton struck for his second goal and a succession of points from sharpshooter James Young was followed by a further goal from Culleton again.

To complete the rout Robert Jones brought his tally to a 1-5 with a very late strike.

In the dying minutes of the game each side had a player red-carded.

First to go was Carlow full back Shane Kavanagh and he was followed shortly afterwards by Laois sub Mark Rooney, both for second bookable offences.
