Banner set up semi-final clash with Waterford - report

Clare 1-15 Galway 0-17

The Banner are back in an All-Ireland semi-final after a nail-biting one-point win over neighbours and bitter rivals Galway at Croke Park.

An injury-time Colin Lynch point sent Clare through after Ger Farragher had grabbed an equaliser for Galway that almost forced a replay.

Galway went six points to one up with Kevin Broderick, Damien Hayes and Eugene Cloonan looking dangerous.

However, an opportunist goal by Niall Gilligan from a placed ball surprised Galway keeper Michael Cribbens and his defence.

Eugene Cloonan and Jamesie O'Connor exchanged frees but two Richie Murray points - one of which was wide, but ruled fair by the umpire - saw Galway take a three point lead to the dressing room.

The second-half was all about the Banner fightback.

Three consecutive scores from Jamesie O'Connor helped Clare to bridge the gap before points from Tony Carmody and Seanie McMahon levelled the sides - 0-13 to 1-10 with 20 minutes to go.

The remainder of the game was neck and neck as the sides matched each other point for point.

Ger Farragher grabbed a score in the first minute of injury-time to level the sides and almost force a replay, but there was just enough time for Colin Lynch, who had a superb outing at midfield, to sneak the point that sent Galway out and Clare to a semi-final clash with Waterford.
