Hurling: Cork gain revenge over Tipperary
Cork 0-21 Tipperary 1-10
Classy Cork gained revenge over Tipperary, spoiling their 100% league record, with a lesson in exhibition hurling at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
Cork were at one stage 13 points ahead of the All-Ireland champions in blustery conditions.
The rebels made it 0-10 0-03 at the break with a brace of scores from Newtownshandrum brothers Ben and Gerry O'Connor, taking advantage of an out-of-sorts Tipperary half-back line.
Tipp began the second half with a point but scores from Gerry O'Connor, John Gardiner, Kieran Murphy and three from Ben O'Connor sent Cork into a 13 point lead with 13 minutes gone.
Paul Kelly pulled two points back for Tipperary and the league champs began a mini-revival.
Five unanswered scores, including a goal from Paul Kelly, pulled Tipperary closer to Cork at 0-18 to 1-10.
However, it was then that Cork showed their true colours and points from Diarmuid O'Sullivan, substitute Pat Ryan and Ben O'Connor sealed the win for the rebels.
Cork now face Kilkenny in the 2002 National Hurling League final in two weeks time.
