GAA: Dempsey remains Wexford hurling manager
Tony Dempsey has ended months of speculation and decided to remain on as Wexford Senior Hurling Manager.
Wexford hurling followers overwhelmed Tony with their show of support and requests that he remain at the helm of hurling in the county for at least another year.
It was this show of support not just from the supporters but also the players which helped make Tony’s decision far easier having contemplated his future over the past two months.
Wexford players never doubted that Dempsey was the man to lead them into next years new look championship and league campaigns and have inundated their manager with requests to remain in place.
There were lots of speculation as to whether he would stay or not for it’s widely known that he was bitterly disappointed at the circumstances which surrounded their defeat to eventual All-Ireland champions, Tipperary, at the semi-final stage.
"I’ll be taking up the option of the second year. I’ve spoken to some people about it and the genuine show of support made it difficult for me to walk away," said Dempsey.
He added: "There’s a romance about Wexford hurling and it’s difficult not to be part of it."
By agreeing to stay on is a huge vote of confidence in Wexford hurling. Having lost heavily to Kilkenny in the Leinster final, Wexford bounced back with a dramatic All-Ireland quarter-final victory over Limerick, before their two game showdown with Tipperary.
Team captain Darragh Ryan was elated with the decision of Dempsey to stay on.
"He came in at a difficult time and along with the two selectors did a marvellous job," he said.
" We got results and Tony decision to stay will bring continuity to the set-up. It’s great news. The players will be delighted with his decision."
