Sean Carey seeks ‘buzz’ of winning All-Ireland

Mayo selector Sean Carey admits his involvement with the county panel will only be truly enjoyable if the team win an All-Ireland title and break the duck to Mayo’s last honour in 1951.

Sean Carey seeks ‘buzz’ of winning All-Ireland

A former county minor and U21 team-mate of manager Stephen Rochford, the Kiltane man doesn’t deny he’s savouring the role but is hoping to make it count to get the most out of the experience.

“Is it enjoyable? Yeah, it would be. It would be something that’s enjoyable but you would be busy. I’d be the type of person that wants to win, basically. It’ll be enjoyable if that’s accomplished but the taking part, it’s enjoyable but there has to be something at the end of it too. That’s the way I would be anyway. You have to try and compete anyway and that’s what I’d get the buzz from, achieving something or trying to be part of something that is successful.” Carey had been playing senior club football a year before Rochford made the call to him at the end of last season to come on board as part of his proposed management team. “I had kind of stopped playing because club football in Mayo is quite competitive and even the preparation levels of that for someone who’s 38 or 39, it’s not really conducive to that.

“So I made a decision to maybe not play that and then the phone-call came. I’m lucky my wife is interested in football or I’d probably have been shot a long time ago! Once I thought about it for a short spell of time I was very interested.”

Carey focuses on team selection with an emphasis on how personnel and tactics would work. Along with Carey, Rochford, Donie Buckley and Tony McEntee are all strong characters but there is unison in the group’s work, he says.

“We get on very well together. That helps. Tony obviously had his successes with Armagh, Donie was involved with the boys before. I think the fact that we’d have similar views on what happens and how we should do things, I think that has helped that process and the fact that we get on well together has meant that it has gelled pretty quickly and been easy to sort out.”
