Darragh Clinton stars as underdogs Westmeath stun Eddie Brennan’s Kilkenny

Westmeath 1-11 Kilkenny 0-12: Raging underdogs Westmeath pulled off one of the great shocks of the Bord Gais Energy Leinster U21 hurling championship by dumping luckless Kilkenny out.

Darragh Clinton’s eight-point haul was decisive in Mullingar where Westmeath defied all expectation to hold out for a famous two-point point win to propel them through to a June 16 semi-final clash with Dublin or Wexford.

Kilkenny had a chance to win the game but sub Andrew Gaffney blasted a 76th minute penalty wide with the last puck. Free-taker John Walsh also blasted two great opportunities wide.
