Paudie Murray blasts ‘ridiculous’ scheduling
Cork are fixed to play Tipperary in the Munster camogie final in Cashel at 4.30 and the Ladies Gaelic Football Association announced yesterday that the Tesco Division 1 final replay between Cork and Galway will be played in Portlaoise at 7.30pm on the same evening.
That leaves dual panellists Rena Buckley, Briege Corkery and Meabh Cahalane with a huge decision to make, although Cahalane is expected to choose camogie. Murray indicated last night that he will contact ladies football boss Eamonn Ryan later today to discuss the impasse.
Buckley and Corkery both played against Galway in last Saturday’s drawn football decider, with Cahalane on the subs bench, and Corkery celebrated her engagement later that evening before lining out against Clare in Sunday’s Munster camogie semi-final.
And the fact that Irish TV are screening Saturday’s provincial camogie decider live is an added factor to consider for Buckley and Corkery as they decide which game to play in, with a fourth successive Munster camogie title on offer before the footballers aim for a third League crown in a row.
A situation could yet arise where the pair decide to play in both fixtures but Murray fumed: “It’s a ridiculous situation and very unfair on the girls involved. You’d think that common sense would prevail in a situation like this but obviously not.”
One member of the Cork ladies senior football panel tweeted her displeasure last night.
Eimear Scally wrote: “A bit of common sense and courtesy wouldn’t go astray for some players this weekend. Two major games fixed for one day and yet we’re trying to control player burnout.”
