Ryan and Carey fail to regain Limerick roles

Limerick GAA chiefs have decided against re-appointing Brian Ryan as minor hurling boss — a week after he brought the county to the All-Ireland final.

Ryan and Carey fail to regain Limerick roles

And that isn’t the only managerial upheaval on Shannonside this week with Ciarán Carey set to be replaced at the U21 helm by former senior selector John Kiely.

Ryan’s two year term ended with that defeat by Kilkenny and though he was understood to be keen to remain in the role, board officials have instead opted for Leo O’Connor to take charge.

O’Connor guided the county to an All-Ireland MHC title in 1984 and has had a spell with the Mayo hurlers. Trainer Jerry Wallace, along with John Mulqueen, Pat Donnelly and Brian Foley will make up the backroom team. Ryan had previously expressed an interest in the U21 position but the board have instead opted for Kiely, a selector under John Allen when the county won the Munster SHC title last year, Carey had received a one year term and his side crashed out to eventual All-Ireland champions Clare, in the provincial quarter-final in June.

O’Connor and Kiely were proposed for the roles at an officers meeting of the board on Monday night and their names go before club delegates tomorrow night.
