Don’t scrap Sigerson, says Billy

Leave this competition alone was Billy Morgan’s stark warning to GAA top-brass following UCC’s Sigerson Cup final victory.

Morgan acknowledged the Sigerson Cup had many critics, but pleaded with GAA hierarchy not to tinker with third-level’s premier football competition.

“I have heard people want to get rid of it and that is ridiculous because if inter-county managers... in fairness Cork and Kerry managers never complain about the Sigerson Cup because they know they are getting players out of it,” he noted.

“It is a great breeding ground for inter-county players. If you are successful at Sigerson you will more than likely make it at inter-county level.”

The former Cork boss welcomed the new hooter system tested for the first time over the weekend, favouring its introduction at inter-county level. “I think it is a good idea. I didn’t even hear it go at full-time in the final. It takes time control out of the referee’s hand. I didn’t think it was a good idea to introduce it at this stage of the competition. I think it is a good idea and I think it would be good at inter-county level also.”

UUJ manager Adrian McGuckin said it was “incredible” the clock wasn’t stopped by referee Joe McQuillan once during the second-half of the final.
