Relegation battles taking centre stage on busy weekend

The recent bad weather means there will be a host or rearranged games taking place this weekend in the leagues and cups.

Relegation battles taking centre stage on busy weekend

There are a couple of big relegation battles with Skibbereen and Muskerry meeting at the West Cork venue. Skibb will want a big improvement on their previous home game while Muskerry may fancy their chances after a recent win over Galbally.

Galbally themselves face Clonakilty and will hope home advantage can help pull them closer to safety. While Kanturk look to have the league title wrapped up, the four teams immediately behind them face each other in a bid to get a high finishing spot. St Mary’s lead the chasing pack and will look to hold on to second place with a home win over Tralee, who will be eager to boost their chances of All-Ireland Cup qualification.

Should Mary’s slip-up, the winner of the Newcastle West and Clonmel clash can go into second with the Limerick side enjoying home advantage. Bandon and Kinsale claimed maximum points last week so the pressure is on Thurles to win at Presentation and stay in the Division 2 promotion hunt. A win could see the Tipp side leapfrog Bandon into third.

Crosshaven host Killorglin in a game which also will have a big impact on the scrap to avoid the drop. Killarney host Newport and the visitors are unlikely to get the win.

In Division 3, Abbeyfeale and Ballincollig face tricky away trips and will both be eager to record victories to boost their promotion credentials. Abbeyfeale travel to Scariff while Ballincollig make the short trip to Douglas. Carrick-on-Suir host Charleville in a mid-table clash.

In the Challenge Cup, Cobh Pirates return to Mallow in a rematch of last week’s league encounter. While the East Cork side won relatively comfortably, Mallow had plenty of possession in difficult conditions.

Bandon will look to maintain their winning momentum in the Challenge Shield as they face Youghal while Dungarvan will expect to advance in the Martin O’Sullivan Cup at the expense of Dunmanway-Bantry Bay.
