Brudair in line for Treaty post

John Brudair is tipped to become Limerick’s new senior football manager.

It was revealed at a county board meeting on Tuesday that a name will be put forward for ratification imminently, and it is understood Brudair, who sought the job in the past, will take over from Maurice Horan.

County football board assistant secretary John Galvin said: “Hopefully by the weekend we’ll get it sorted. We are close and it should be settled by Monday at least.

“We have worked hard on this. A couple of things went against us but you have to start all over again.”

Brudair recently led St Patrick’s to the Limerick SFC final and a football board sub-committee has monitored him closely in recent weeks. Now it seems that football board chairman Sean McAuliffe has got his man and Brudair may bring on board former Limerick defender Tommy Stack as he attempts to finalise a backroom team.

Brudair and Stack are Dromcollogher-Broadford clubmates and Stack has already sampled intercounty management with the Limerick ladies senior footballers.

Along with coach Ned English, he guided Dromcollogher-Broadford to successive Limerick SFC crowns in 2008 and 2009, and the AIB Munster club championship in 2008.

Meanwhile, Limerick chiefs informed Tuesday’s board meeting a successor for John Allen as senior hurling manager will be named shortly.

A number of candidates have been linked with the position, including Tipperary’s 2010 All-Ireland winning boss Liam Sheedy and Cork trio Ger Cunningham, Donal Óg Cusack and former manager Donal O’Grady.

Cunningham’s Limerick namesake, a former selector who was involved behind the scenes with the Waterford senior hurlers in 2013, has also been mentioned as a potential successor, as well as former full-back TJ Ryan, who managed the U21s this year.

In other business, it was confirmed the 2013 Munster minor hurling winning management team of Brian Ryan, Jerry Wallace, Eamonn Cregan and Paul Finn have been ratified for next year. And well-known businessman and racehorse owner JP McManus will remain on board as Limerick team sponsor for the 2014 campaign.

At their forthcoming county board convention, there will be just one contest as Mickey Graham has been nominated to challenge Central Council delegate Rory Kiely.
