Late goals swing it Toomevara’s way

Toomevara swooped late for two injury time goals for a 3-21 to 1-26 win over Kilruane MacDonaghs in a high scoring thriller in this Tipperary SHC second round game at Nenagh on Saturday.

Kilruane suffered a big setback early on when t county man “Buggy” O’Meara was red-carded with Toomevara’s Brian McCormack. Toome lined out without the injured John O Brien and looked like they were heading for an easy win when they led at the break, 1-15 to 0-7.

However, Kilruane staged a brilliant recovery with an exhibition of point scoring to go four points ahead as the game went into injury time. However, Toome hit the brace of goals in injury time that ensured their victory by a point.

County man Brendan Maher was an influential figure as Borrisoleigh got their challenge back on track with a comprehensive 5-18 to 0-9 second round win , over a disappointing J K Brackens at The Ragg. Maher scored 1-10, and though only a point of his scores came from play, he was the orchestrator in chief.

Maher had a goal from a 20 metre free after only one minute, and Borris had further goals by Keith Maher and Keith Ryan as they surged to an interval lead of 3-9 to 0-4, despite playing into the fresh breeze.

The second-half was a formality with Conor Kenny and Keith Maher notching further goals for Borris. County forward Shane Bourke played with a heavily strapped hand but was still J K Brackens’ best player, scoring four great points. Eamon Corcoran also worked hard to stem the Borrisoleigh tide.

Moycarkey-Borris, despite being down to 14 men, put in a storming finish to oust Portroe in a second round thriller at Borrisoleigh on Saturday.

Burgess were 1-17 to 0-13 winners over Carrick Davins. Damian O Brien got Burgess’ goal in the 24th minute which moved them into a half-time lead of 1-7 to 0-4. Davins battled hard after the break but with Eoin Hogan, Brian Hogan and Daniel Ryan regularly on target, Burgess comfortably secured their place in the second round against Cappawhite .

Roscrea turned on the style in the second half to overcome Knockavilla Kickhams 2-14 to 2-11. Knockavilla looked likely winners when they led at half-time 2-9 to 0- 7.

Gearoid Ryan set down a marker for the county selectors with a top-line performance as Templederry beat Ballingarry 3-21 to 0-10. Ryan scored 2-5 from play, with Tom Ryan getting Templederry’s other goal. Templederry led 2-7 to 0-9 at half-time, having played against the fresh breeze.

Last year’s Mid, County and Munster champions Sarsfields assured their senior status with a 2-20 to 1-7 win over Boherlahan-Dualla in the quarter-final of the O Riain Cup.

Seamie Leahy had an early goal for Boherlahan but Pa Bourke netted for Sarsfields at the start of the second quarter and they went on to lead 1-9 to 1-4 at half-time. With the wind behind them after the break, Sarsfield were well in control.
