Counties’ open night draws widespread support

The GAA’s decision to designate this coming Friday, May 10, as an open night for counties ahead of the provincial championships has received widespread support.

Counties’ open night draws widespread support

An initiative first run last year, this time the event was included in the association’s official calendar from the outset, ensuring easier planning for counties. Limerick and Cork, who clash in the Munster SFC on May 25, are two counties hoping to generate maximum benefit.

“The county senior football and hurling sides, as well as the camogie team, will all be present in UL on Friday at 7pm,” said Limerick secretary Michael O’Riordan. “We would hope to have a good crowd there as it is a great chance for younger supporters to meet the players. Management will also be there, so it also serves as a press evening, which is very convenient.”

Cork PRO Tracey Kennedy feels that the extra notice given of this year’s open night has helped preparations.

“These are something that would have been done in the past when Cork got to All-Ireland finals,” she said, “and we’re pleased that it’s becoming a regular event.

“We’ll be keeping it reasonably informal but there will be the opportunity to get pictures taken with players and have autographs with players, and there will be posters and wristbands available too.We are also asking supporters to wear their county colours as there will be a prize for the best-dressed fan.”

Cork’s open night takes place at Sarsfields Hurling Club in Riverstown at 7pm, while Tipperary’s starts at the same time in Ryan Motor Power in Clonmel.

There is a 7.30pm for the Kerry event in Fitzgerald Stadium, and in Cusack Park in Ennis, Clare supporters will have the opportunity to test their shots against goalkeepers and receive tips on free-taking.

Due to a clash with a number of county championship fixtures, Waterford will not be holding an open night on Friday, but it will be rescheduled for a later date.
