Donnelly expects ‘mighty’ battle as Red Hand face Donegal
With full points from their opening two league games, the Red Hands are setting a hot pace along with Dublin and Kildare, but one defeat will pull them down into the chasing pack, and could have a defining impact on their Division One challenge.
“It has put us in a good position, but we know that next day out, no matter how many wins you have, no matter what your record is, it counts for nothing.
“It’s the All-Ireland champions we’re facing, we’ll look forward to that, but we know what a mighty challenge it’s going to be,” said the Red Hand assistant manager.
Donnelly is happy with the way the team has adapted to top tier football after two seasons in Division Two, but warned that the toughest challenges lie ahead.
“The competition from the teams we’re facing is of the highest calibre. We wanted to be back in Division One, and we’re delighted we are, but we know it won’t be easy.”
Having dealt with the challenges of Down and Mayo, Tyrone have already made considerable strides towards consolidating their place in Division One. A successful Dr McKenna Cup campaign played an important role in preparing the players for the league, according to Donnelly.
He said: “We couldn’t wish for better, but it was built upon the foundation of a good McKenna Cup campaign.”
