Sharpshooter Glennon points Westmeath to easy victory
A strong and blustery wind had a major bearing on the exchanges but with conditions as good for one team as the other it was Glennon who shaded the game for Westmeath with his accuracy from play and frees.
Westmeath had first use of the wind and went in at the end of the first period of play leading by 0-7 to 0-0. Indeed Wicklow failed to score in either period they faced into the wind, though they had cut the margin to 0-5 to 0-8 in the first period they were aided by the elements.
Trailing by 0-5 to 0-10 entering the fourth period of play, Wicklow were not out of the reckoning but did not make full use of the wind, enabling Glennon and Westmeath to close out the game.
Tony Hannon was Wicklow’s top marksman with 0-4, but on the day no one was fit to match Westmeath’s Denis Glennon.
Westmeath lined out without Garrycastle players and Wicklow were without players from Éire Óg Greystones as both clubs are preparing for important All-Ireland club semi-finals in January.
