Committee to find Tribe boss revealed

FORMER Galway boss Liam Sammon will be part of a five-man committee to interview candidates to take over the Tribesmen from Tomás Ó Flatharta.

The race to be the next Galway boss — the fourth in five years — is down to two candidates with All-Ireland U21-winning manager Alan Mulholland the favourite. Former Offaly boss Gerry Fahy, who was in charge of the Galway minors in 2009 and last year, is also in contention.

Two others who were nominated — current Sligo boss Kevin Walsh and former Galway midfielder and manager Billy Joyce — withdrew from the race.

The identity of the new Galway football boss will be known by the end of the month, with interviews for the post due to be held next week.

Football board chairman John Joe Holleran, secretary Seamus O’Grady, club delegates Gearóid Denver (Michael Breathnach) and Gerry Hussey (Dunmore McHales) join Sammon on the committee which will interview the candidates next week.

O’Grady said yesterday interviews will take place even if one of the candidates withdraws from the race.

“Even if one them pulls out of the race, we will still follow through with the interview process. We will want to hear what they have to say and their backroom teams,” said O’Grady.

“Interviews will be held next week so we aim to have a new manager in place by the end of the month on Friday week.”
