The Castlebar based company have been the Green and Red’s main sponsor since 2003, but the relationship goes back to 1998 when the company was Staunton Sports.

The new chairman of the Mayo County Board, Paddy McNicholas, said the news that the sports chain has indicated a willingness to support the county is a major boost to James Horan and his management team.

“It is a great boost in this day and age. The deal is not fully signed as of yet but they have indicated their willingness to go ahead with us again next year and we would like to thank them for their continued support.”

Meanwhile, the new Mayo boss ran the rule over the county’s talent this weekend as two trial matches were organised prior to the announcement of his squad for the FBD league.

Mayo travel to face Leitrim in their FBD League Group 2 opener in Ballinamore next Sunday afternoon and it is expected that members of the county’s successful minor and U21 teams of the last few years will feature heavily in Horan’s selection.

One man definitely out of the reckoning is corner-forward Conor Mortimer, who suffered a knee ligament injury in training for University of Ulster, Jordanstown, while Alan Dillon, Peadar Gardiner and Neil Douglas will be involved with NUI Galway. Niall Prenty and Brendan Walsh will field for GMIT while Tom Parsons and Kevin Keane will play for IT Sligo.
