Tangled web as fans split on Rebel stand-off

FANS on GAA discussion forums reacted fast and furiously to Cork’s decision to concede a walkover to Limerick IT in the Waterford Crystal Cup.

Opinion was overwhelmingly against the players on the issue even though most fans are a bit uncomfortable about lining up with a county board against players, not least with Cork County Board.

Fans from other counties gleefully look forward to even more walkovers easing their passage in the league and championships. Here’s a selection of comments from the popular web site ‘An Fear Rua — The GAA Unplugged!’ www.anfearrua.com

CORK PLAYERS have backed themselves into a corner. This standoff is going to get very messy. I was hoping Cork County Board would put out a second 15. Most teams try out new players at this stage of the year anyway. Winning games now is not that important.

— East Gael

WHY WON’T Cork just put out a second team or a third team or any damn 15 that will wear a red jersey and let the whining stop?

— Limerick Horse

THE REASON Cork won’t put out a second team because they’re scared Kilkenny will overtake them on the titles ladder this year. If the Cork County Board forces a team to compete, then there will be more problems and this will not aid Cork in their attempts to stop the Cats’ assault on the record.

— An Réiteoir

TIPP ARE going to get a bye into the Munster Final against Clare.

And there might also be a so-called weaker county in the Munster football final against Kerry after all!!

— The Baron

CORK WON’T stop Kilkenny taking over at the top of the roll of honour! More likely Tipp, Waterford, Limerick or who even Galway!!

— Cic Fada

THIS WILL bring a lot more shame on Cork in the long term. This is an absolute disgrace.

— Dan Carter

BY PROVIDING a walk over to LIT, Cork have taken this problem to a new level and it will more than likely get very bitter now.

— GAA All Stars

OTHER PLAYERS will not tog out because they know these players have the good of future generations of Cork hurlers and footballers at heart, in spite of all the Cork County Board ‘spin’ on the issue.

Any player who wishes to play for Cork can do so, and he would be cheered to the rafters by the conservative hobgoblins.

Unfortunately for such a player, all progressive minded people in Cork will not pay money to see them, and they will withdraw their contributions to the board draw. This is happening already

Sponsors will eventually withdraw, and Cork’s presumed early exit from the championship will result in a chronic shortage of money to fund the county board.

The outgoing players are trying to force a bit of civic responsibility on those who administer the games.

I for one applaud them for it. I suspect the board will cave in when it sees which way the wind is blowing.

Every one of these boys is a club player first and foremost. You’ll find that most of their club colleagues know exactly what they’re about, and support them all the way.

— Corkoniense

GREAT! AS we all know, no Cork man ever backs down from anything. Therefore the GAA will cease to exist in the county and a lot of us will be very, very happy! Looking forward to a Rebel free summer!
