Walsh points Tracton to victory
For 55 minutes it was a mediocre fare. But, for the last five minutes, Tracton undid the knot, inspired by substitute Peter Kingston, and that was enough to close out the game.
When you goal with your first touch and then lay off a clever pass for another substitute Damien Walsh to shoot over the insurance point, then you are worth your weight in gold on that night to your team.
The dead-eyed Ronan Walsh was ‘man of the match’ by some distance but for Inniscarra it is all over for another year.
Scorers for Tracton: R. Walsh 1-8 (0-7 frees), P. Kingston 1-0, S. Sullivan and D. Walsh 0-1 each.
Inniscarra: N. O’ Regan 0-6 (0-5 frees and 0-1 ‘65), S. Olden 0-2, J. Casey and D. O’ Connell 0-1 each.
IN the Cork IHC, Fr, O’Neill’s progressed to the Evening Echo Cork Co IHC quarter-final, where they will meet the winners of Cobh and Carrigaline, after a facile 2-15 to 0-8 victory over St. Vincent’s at Cobh on Saturday.
For St Vincent’s, this is another big disappointment as most of these players were part of their senior football championship side that lost to Bantry Blues a couple of weeks ago. It is noticeable too for city clubs – the four contenders in this hurling championship (Blackrock, St Finbarr’s, Glen Rovers and St Vincent’s) have now departed.
Ultimately, though, there won’t be any complaints about this result. It was mostly one-way traffic for O’Neill’s as they led 1-10 to 0-5 at the interval. A second goal on 40 minutes saw that stretch 2-14 to 0-6.
Scorers for Fr O’Neill’s: G O’Leary 0-7 (0-5 frees, 0-1 65m), J Flavin 1-2, G Holland 0-3, Q Higgins 1-0, E Holland, P Butler and B Murphy 0-1 each.
St Vincent’s: C Barry 0-3 (0-1 65, 0-1 free), P Ahern, S Ray, D O’Brien, P Cullinane (free) and G O’Connor 0-1 each.
DESPITE being reduced to 14 shortly after the start of the second-half, resilient Killavullen held on for an exciting 1-9 to 0-6 victory over Newcestown in this Evening Echo Cork Co Premier IFC third round at Donoughmore on Saturday.
Killavullen were leading by six points, having dominated the opening half, when corner back Bartley Hayes was red-carded in the 38th minute for a reckless challenge. But the North Cork side held their composure and never allowed Newcestown to get a grip despite their numerical advantage.
Scorers for Killavullen: A. O’Driscoll 1-0, L. Dorgan 0-6 (0-2f), J. O’Neill 0-3 (0-2f).
Newcestown: P. Condon 1-1, H. Curtin 0-3 (0-2f), T. Ryan 0-2 (frees).
