THEY came from the four corners of Ireland to St Mary’s Cemetery, Innishannon, Co Cork yesterday to bid a fond farewell to Con Murphy, one of the most revered Presidents in the history of the GAA.

Such was the high esteem in which Con was held that the attendance included the Bishop of Cork John Buckley, Lord Mayor Councillor Michael Aherne, former GAA presidents Paddy McFlynn, Jack Boothman, Joe McDonagh, Sean Kelly and the present incumbent Nickey Brennan, along with officers from the four provincial councils, and officers of Kerry, Tipperary, Waterford, Cork county boards, as well as rank and file members of the association in Cork city and county. The Taoiseach was represented by his Aide De Camp Commandant Michael Murray.

In a moving tribute to the late Mr Murphy, Cork County Secretary Frank Murphy told the packed church and grounds that it was appropriate that his board should say a simple buiochás to a man who had given magnificent service to the board and association since he became a member of the executive in 1947.
