Wexford probe into assaults

WEXFORD GAA chiefs are to launch an investigation into the alleged assault of two umpires at a local championship game on Saturday.

Wexford probe into assaults

The assaults took place during the town derby clash of Volunteers and St Joseph’s in the Wexford District junior football championship at Páirc Charman.

One of the umpires was allegedly felled by a blow from a St Joseph’s player who was red carded by referee Sean Whelan. Minutes later at the opposite end of the pitch, another umpire was the victim of an assault which led to a free-for-all before the referee brought the row under control and completed the game.

Wexford GAA Disciplinary Committee are awaiting the report of the referee and a local garda.

A spokesman for the GAA said they will take whatever action is deemed necessary.
