Brennan appeals to fans to stay off pitch in Croker
Writing in his programme notes for the weekend games in Croke Park, he said it was a “serious concern” from a health and safety perspective.
“I am appealing to supporters to stay off the pitch. Remember that the players have endured a physically demanding encounter and they need space to recover,’’ he said.
“While the sight of thousands of supporters entering the pitch is seen as a great GAA tradition, nonetheless, the danger to players and young supporters cannot be ignored.
“Unless the situation improves the GAA will be forced to take remedial action. The traditional presentation ceremony after a game, including the speeches, may have to be curtailed or even cancelled if it is decided that there is a health and safety risk to patrons.
“It is you the supporters of the various counties who will decide on what action, if any, we have to take in the coming weeks.’’
He also issued a warning to clubs and county boards about following correct procedures in the sale of property.
With some clubs and county boards considering moves to different locations, Mr Brennan says it’s “crucial” units receive the necessary clearance from the appropriate GAA body.
“The proceeds of any sale must be ploughed back into the club for the developments of additional facilities and must not be used to support the day-to-day financing of the club.”
Meanwhile, GAA chiefs are to investigate the delayed start to Saturday’s All-Ireland SFC quarter-final between Dublin and Westmeath.
The game, scheduled to thrown in at 4pm, was forced to be put back until 4.15pm due to the late arrival of thousands of supporters, many of whom had been in pubs in the vicinity.
Mr Brennan promised that a review will take place immediately.
The gardaí had been anxious to see the starting time brought forward to avoid such a scenario developing.
Dublin County Board chief John Costello had issued an appeal to Dublin supporters during the week.
“Dublin supporters have a long-established reputation as being one of the best and most amiable in the country. It’s important we maintain that for the game against Westmeath on Saturday. With your co-operation, we hope that all our club members and supporters can contribute to the smooth running of the game by co-operating with stewards and gardaí in and around Croke Park before, during and after the game against Westmeath.
“Remember the less difficulties stewards and gardaí encounter, the better it will be for them to concentrate on directing traffic and assisting people who might be in need of their help or have an emergency situation.
“Along with the team, Dublin supporters have been one of the success stories of this year’s football championship. Let’s continue to support our team in a manner that reflects the true values of Dublin GAA.”
