O'Gorman finally gets reward

After failing to Tipperary in two successive Munster finals, he finally stirred his side to victory last night in Páirc Uí Chaoimh and it gave him great satisfaction.

"The previous two defeats were always in the back of my mind, and the fear is always there that another could happen," said the Milford man.

"Things weren't looking too good in the early minutes of the game. We had lost the toss and Tipp were four points clear but we stuck to our task superbly and going in on level terms at half time was a huge bonus for us.

"I never doubted the character of the players. You saw out there tonight how committed they were and even when things weren't going right for them, they never panicked.

"The victory more than makes up for the two defeats, and we can now look forward to the All-Ireland series with a degree of confidence," the Cork coach said.

"We had many heroes. Our defence were magnificent all through and in Shane O'Neill we had easily the best player on view. His point from far out was inspirational.

"There was no need to spur on the lads. The sight of a Tipp jersey will always rouse Cork and our ability to score goals was probably the difference between the teams.

"We set out our aim to win a Munster championship and that has now been achieved. This is a victory to savour and we focus in on the All-Ireland semi-final in the coming weeks."

Fellow selector Tomás Mulcahy said it was a victory for courage and commitment.

"Despite playing against the wind, we got some crucial goals which kept us in it at a time when Tipp needed to build up a sizeable lead while playing with the strong wind.

"The two first-half goals were vital and going in at half-time on level terms was a huge bonus for us. But games are won over 60 odd minutes, and fair play to the lads, they got stuck in on the changeover and outhurled Tipp," said Mulcahy.

"The victory is huge for the county. It means we have won all of the Munster hurling titles and that there is a wealth of talent around."
