Slaneysiders extend search for football boss

AFTER more than two months of searching there is still no indication who will replace Pat Roe as Wexford senior football manager.

The special committee set up by the county board have been unable to come up with a successor despite meeting a number of potential candidates.

Though names like Michael Dempsey, who has remained as a Kilkenny senior hurling selector, former Dublin greats Charlie Redmond and Mick Galvin, former Carlow manager Mick Condon, Liam Kearns, the former Limerick manager, and John O’Mahony, the former Galway manager, have been linked to the post, the committee has been unable to come up with a name to put before the county board for ratification.

Now it’s believed the committee have cast their net wider, with former Cork manager Larry Tompkins high on their hit-list, along with former Cork dual star Denis Walsh, who had a spell in charge of Waterford.

Although Wexford qualified for their first ever Division 1A national league final this year, losing out to Armagh, the county’s footballers are now becoming increasingly anxious, particularly with the new season less than three months away.

Meanwhile, county hurling star Rory McCarthy will be hoping that his club’s county senior hurling final does not end in a draw on Sunday next.

McCarthy is one of St. Martin’s key players in their qualifying for a final clash with reigning champions, Oulart-the-Ballagh, but he could be left facing a dilemma should the game end level. The Wexford star is due to get married to Sinead Neville on Sunday week in South Africa, which would leave him unavailable for a replay.

Better news for Wexford hurling manager Seamus Murphy is that the star attacker is curtailing his world tour to three months that would leave him available for the national league campaign on his return.
