Kilmoyley break down old hurling boundaries

A LITTLE bit of hurling history was created this week when leading Kerry club Kilmoyley, trained by former Cork and St Finbarr’s player John Meyler, got the go-ahead to play competitive hurling across the county bounds in the Cork City Division.

Kilmoyley will now make the near 130 mile round trip to Leeside for Seandún-Carrigdhoun Minor A league action, agreeing to travel for all games. And it is a unification welcomed by all parties.

The move was first mooted by Meyler, who has been doing Trojan work in Kilmoyley. But a lot of doors had to be unlocked before it could be ratified.

Kerry County Board were first to give it their blessing, seeing it as a chance to improve hurling standards there, and when it came before the Munster Council they quickly gave it their approval.

During the week clubs from the Seandún division in Cork met to discuss the venture and it was a move warmly embraced with a unanimous ‘yes’ verdict.

City Division chairman Derek Connolly welcomed the move.

“In fairness Kilmoyley really wanted to join us and by the reaction at our divisional meeting, clubs are looking forward to some new competition.

“While Kilmoyley have agreed to travel to Cork for the games, don’t rule out the city clubs travelling to Kilmoyley when things get off the ground,” he said.

The league starts on Sunday week and Kilmoyley’s historic opener will be against Tracton at Minane Bridge.
