Triple bill to make history in Waterford

WATERFORD County Board will make history tomorrow afternoon by hosting three county finals at Fraher Field, Dungarvan.

Triple bill to make history in Waterford

Topping the triple-header bill is the senior football decider between the reigning champions Stradbally and the Nire (4pm). The day’s proceedings begin as Geraldines (Aglish) take on Fenor in the junior hurling ‘A’ final at 1pm. The MFC ‘A’ decider between Ballinacourty and Gaultier (2.30pm) will act as second curtain-raiser to the senior action.

Defending champions Stradbally enter that decider as favourites though their opponents are five times Waterford SFC champions.

Though Stradbally mastered Tramore and Kilrossanty with ease, they were less than impressive in the drawn semi-final against Rathgormack when they came from five points down with as many minutes remaining to sensationally force a replay.

George, Lar, Tom and Michael Walsh, Trevor and Oliver Costello, Niall and Trevor Curran, John Hearne, Stephen Cunningham and Ger Power are their key figures.

Nire by comparison began tentatively and were taken to a first-round replay by Ardmore before squeezing home in the replay by the narrowest of margins (1-11 to 2-7).

St Saviour’s presented little more than token opposition next time out, and their 1-15 to 1-8 semi-final defeat of Dungarvan suggests they have now peaked at just the right time.

The talented Bobby Power is out through injury but his prolific-scoring brother Connie is fit for selection. The experience of Ian, Justin, Martin, Pat, Ger and Shane Walsh, Michael Byrne, David Ryan and skipper John Moore will be required if the 2000 champions are to produce a shock.
