Dead leg could rule Farragher out of Galway’s clash with Cats
The ace free-taker is suffering from a dead leg sustained in a training match. Farragher has been unable to train since suffering the knock last week and his fitness will be assessed this evening when the squad trains at Pearse Stadium.
Also doubtful for the game are full-forward Niall Healy, who is also suffering from a dead leg, and Kevin Hayes who picked up a hand injury.
“The injuries are being treated intensively but all we can do is wait and see how they progress,” said selector Gerry Dempsey.
He added that the selectors would give the players as long as possible to recover from the injuries.
The Galway team may be announced after the squad trains in Athenry on Thursday evening.
Meanwhile, Cork footballer Phillip Clifford will discover today the severity of a knee injury sustained at the weekend. He limped out of Bantry’s SFC replay against Douglas causing concern for county boss Billy Morgan ahead of the All-Ireland SFC semi-final against Kerry on August 28.
“Right now I feel fine, but I’m going to have a scan on the knee this afternoon and I’ll know more then,” said Clifford.
“The knee was very sore after picking up the injury, but I’m confident there is nothing seriously wrong. I would hate to miss out on the Kerry game, but if the scan shows up something is amiss, I’ll have to have it rectified.”
The success of the county senior hurlers in Sunday’s All-Ireland SHC semi-final against Clare has come at a cost. Kieran Murphy (Erin’s Own) has a suspected broken finger and will miss his club’s SHC quarter-final against Newtownshandrum in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday night (5.30pm). Erin’s Own may also be without Brian Corcoran who is struggling with a shoulder injury.
The four quarter-finals of the Cork SHC championship are down for decision this weekend. On Saturday, Páirc Uí Chaoimh hosts a double header between UCC and defending champions Na Piarsaigh at 5.30pm, followed by the all-city meeting of Blackrock and St Finbarrs at 6.50pm.
On Sunday, Newtownshandrum clash with Erin’s Own at 5.30pm, followed at 6.50pm by the match between Sarsfields and Cloyne.
Meanwhile, injured Laois forwards, Kevin Fitzpatrick, Chris Conway and Barry Brennan, are all on course to be fit for Saturday’s All-Ireland SFC quarter-final against Armagh.
The trio have been receiving treatment to groin, thigh and hamstring knocks respectively and all came through a Sunday practice match.
“We’re hopeful that the three lads will be available at this stage,” said selector Declan O’Loughlin yesterday. “They’re still on the treatment table but they came through Sunday’s game okay. We’re optimistic.”
Mick O’Dwyer names his starting 15 this evening.
