Quigley’s return major boost for Laois as Begley sticks to the Rules

BRENDAN QUIGLEY has wasted little time in putting his Australian disappointment behind him.

Quigley’s return major boost for Laois as Begley sticks to the Rules

The former Brisbane Lions rookie was back training with the Laois U21s just 24 hours after his return to Ireland. He will also be drafted into Mick O’Dwyer’s senior squad in the near future.

The Timahoe clubman hooked up with Sean Dempsey’s squad on Friday evening and will now play a central role in the county’s quest to win a first ever All-Ireland at the grade.

Beyond that, Quigley is certain to be included in the senior squad for the championship. A tall, skilful midfielder, his return finally offers O’Dwyer some badly needed competition for Noel Garvan and Padraig Clancy.

“Brendan’s return is a huge boost to the U21s,” said senior selector Declan O’Loughlin. “I’d say Micko will be taking a good close look at him after that. He had already been called into the senior panel before he left.”

Quigley admitted his premature departure from Aussie Rules was simply a case of homesickness.

“I don’t regret coming out, it’s a great country and I’d like to come back and visit. I don’t think I’m walking out on an opportunity. I’ve given it a couple of months but it’s not for me. Gaelic football is my passion.”

Meanwhile, Colm Begley, has revealed his determination to succeed in Australian Rules football.

“Brendan’s departure affects me in numerous ways but I am pleased he has gone back to Ireland where he will be a lot happier to have his friends and family around him.”

The Stradbally clubman is concentrating on his rookie year and is keeping his options open for the future.

“The hardest part for me is dealing with the homesickness,” he added. “I’ve only recently moved into a new house in Brisbane and I miss my family and friends in Ireland.

“But they are all 100% behind me and when I start playing in matches and training during the week on top of that, I won’t have time to be as homesick.

“I want to stick it out for at least a year and see what happens. I owe it to my family and to the Brisbane Lions, who have made me feel very welcome.”
