Rampant Bishopstown ease through

In recent times, Carrigdhoun have held their heads up honourably in this competition but on this occasion it was back to the bad old ways.

The brilliance of James O’Shea shone brightly early on as Bishopstown put their divisional opponents under the cosh.

O’Shea opened the scoring with a point in the third minute and then set in motion a magnificent movement which ended with left half-forward James Murphy finishing to the net with clinical efficiency.

O’Shea then placed full-forward Shane Conlisk for another point against a Carrigdhoun side whose confidence was dented further with a series of bad wides.

Two further points from O’Shea, one from free, powered Bishopstown into a 1-4 lead after the opening quarter as Carrigdhoun struggled to register on the scoreboard.

After centre-forward Mark Cogan stretched the city side’s lead to eight points, Carrigdhoun were denied a much-needed lifeline when Bishopstown goalkeeper Michael Galvin saved brilliantly from right corner-forward John Murphy.

Then, to make matters worse, Carrigdhoun when right corner-back David Barrett conceded an own goal.

It took Carrigdhoun 28 minutes to get on the scoresheet, courtesy of points from wing-forward Ken Ashman, but, with O’Shea flying up front, Bishopstown led by 2-6 to 0-2 at the break.

Any slender hope of a Carrigdhoun recovery was quickly nipped in the bud after the resumption when the irrepressible O’Shea kicked over two quick points.

Substitute Shanahan managed to get one back for Carrigdhoun but Bishopstown were rampant and swept into an unassailable 2-10 to 0-3 lead entering the closing quarter.

Two further goals sealed a disastrous night for Carrigdhoun.

First, O’Shea pierced their net in the 53rd minute after goalkeeper Anthony Lynch dropped a harmless ball in the area.

A deft flick from right corner-forward Robert Honohan two minutes later completed the rout.

Outstanding Bishopstown goalkeeper Galvin even denied Carrigdhoun two late consolation goals with brilliant saves from Ashman and Murphy.
