O'Rourke will be fit for Olympics

Derval O'Rourke's back spasm will not threaten her participation in the London Olympic Games next month.

When the nine-time national 100m hurdles champion pulled out of her defence at Santry after the back went into spasm during her warm-up, there were immediate fears that the Leevale athlete might miss out on what will be her third Olympic Games.

But those fears receded almost immediately and it is understood there is no fear of her missing out on London.

The cause of the spasm is probably linked to her racing twice in Loughborough on Saturday (in times of 13.27 & 13.20) and travelling between the UK and Ireland for yesterday’s Championships.

She received immediate physio treatment and then went home with instructions to rest, take an ice bath and ingest some anti-inflammatories.

The former world indoor champion will report for more physiotherapy this morning when her back will be further assessed.

There is no fear, though, of her missing the London 2012 Olympic Games.
