Phillies clinch World Series

The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 to win their second World Series title by four games to one this morning.

The game had been suspended due to heavy rain in the middle of the sixth inning on Monday shortly after Tampa Bay tied the score at 2-2.

When the action finally resumed, the Phillies quickly made up for lost time with pinch hitter Geoff Jenkins belting a double off Grant Balfour, moving to third on a Jimmy Rollins bunt and scoring when Akinori Iwamura failed to handle a pop-up by Jayson Werth.

Rocco Baldelli silenced the raucous crowd at Citizen Bank Park in the top of the seventh, crushing a fastball by Ryan Madson into the left field bleachers to tie the score at 3-3.

But the Phillies got another lead-off double in the bottom of the inning when Pat Burrell sent a pitch by JP Howell to the wall in right field. One out later, Pedro Feliz singled up the middle off Chas Bradford to bring in Burrell to put the Phillies back on top 4-3.

The Rays threatened in the top of the ninth when Dioner Navarro singled with one out and pinch runner Fernando Perez stole second. But Brad Lidge struck out Eric Hinske for the final out to give the Phillies victory.
