Ireland stung by Kiwis
Ireland slipped to a controversial 3-1 defeat against hosts New Zealand in the Olympic qualifying tournament in Auckland.
Mark Gleghorne gave them a surprise lead from an early penalty corner – his second in successive matches – but the home side hit back after 25 minutes with a disputed goal.
The diving David Kasoof diverted a right-wing cross in off his chest but the goal was allowed to stand and just 60 seconds later Ben Collier tapped home at the far post to put them ahead.
Collier scored his second nine minutes after half-time to secure victory.
Ireland coach Dave Passmore complained about the lack of a video umpire – which has been used at other major tournaments – and which could have helped rule out New Zealand’s opener.
“It is pointless having a video umpire for only the final game of this Olympic qualification tournament, especially when critical mistakes happen like today,” he said.
“All the sides have invested so much time, effort and financial investment and to only have it available for the play-off match defies logic.
“That aside there were some pleasing aspects of our play and we created enough chances, but were too frantic in front of goal, particularly in the second half.”
