Maurice not Greene with envy

American Maurice Greene insists revenge will not be his motivation when he lines up against Mark Lewis-Francis at tomorrow night’s Norwich Union Grand Prix.

American Maurice Greene insists revenge will not be his motivation when he lines up against Mark Lewis-Francis at tomorrow night’s Norwich Union Grand Prix.

Lewis-Francis edged out Greene in the final leg of the memorable 4x100metres relay at last summer’s Olympic Games in Athens to win gold for Britain.

But Greene has insisted, ahead of their 60m race in Birmingham, that his aim is not to settle an old score when the pair go head-to-head.

Greene, who anchored the US team to the silver medal position, beaten by just 100th of a second, said: “You don’t get revenge in an individual race for what happened in a relay.

“What Great Britain did in the 4x100m was to run a great race. But it took four of them to do it.

“They did not just beat Maurice Greene. They beat the United States 4x100m relay team.

“Everybody saw what happened to us and where I got the baton. I probably ran one of the best races of the year on the relay but we still lost.”
