Heffernan’s London eye
The Corkman secured the 20k time early in the season and had to abandon plans to attempt the longer distance at the world championships following the death of his mother.
Heffernan returned to competitive action last weekend with an Irish record for 10k (39:19) at the Race Walking Challenge final in La Caruna.
He admitted: “I just kept my shape together since I came back from Daegu. I’m going through the motions — doing what I have to do without thinking too much about it. I was going well in training but you never know what is going to happen until you race with the best. That’s why I was happy with La Caruna and I felt I could have got another few places.
“This weekend is all about Olympic qualification and once I achieve that goal I can take a break.”
He will be joined on the line tomorrow by Colin Griffin, who also has London 2012 qualification on his mind.
