Mintern turns tables on club-mate Crowley
Mintern also gained revenge over his Leevale club-mate Philip Crowley (Glanmire CS) in the process after the latter had beaten him in the previous weekend’s 1500m final at the county championships.
Both coached by legendary Leevale Olympian Donie Walsh, the boys enjoyed a ding-dong battle yesterday, with Crowley going past Mintern as they rounded the final bend only for Mintern to find something extra in the tank to win the sprint for the tape.
From a swimming background, Mintern is as tough as they come. A member of Sundays Well SC, he cycles with Youghal CC and runs with Leevale.
He finished 11th at the U19 European Duathlon Championships in Limerick recently and, at just 16, has another three years at this level.
“My aim is to be a professional triathlete and everything has worked according to plan so far,” he said.
There was another very exciting athlete on show yesterday as Jennie Murphy (St Mary’s, Mallow) won the intermediate girls’ javelin.
Murphy won a total of eight championships last year and launched her current campaign in style in Castleisland on Good Friday when she threw a new personal best of 38.64m for third place behind Anita White and Claire Fitzgerald.
Yesterday’s win puts her in line for a second Irish schools intermediate title in Tullamore on the June bank holiday weekend. In the meantime, she has the AVIVA Munster Schools championships at CIT Track on May 21.
Louise Shanahan (Scoil Mhuire) set up another exciting head-to-head with her big rival, Aisling Quinn (Ursuline Waterford), next week with an emphatic win in the junior girls’ 800m.
There have been some great races between these two girls during the indoor season and, to date, the spoils have been evenly shared.
Competition resumes tomorrow at the CIT track from 1.30p.m.
