Meaney: IGB role is both ‘exciting and challenging’

NEW Irish Greyhound Board chairman Phil Meaney has described his role as “exciting and challenging”.

Meaney: IGB role is both ‘exciting and challenging’

The Carlow native takes the post left vacant following the retirement of Dick O’Sullivan earlier this year.

Mr Meaney said yesterday: “I realise this is a tough time to take on the job given the economic climate in the greyhound industry and across the country. But I am prepared for the challenge.

“I worked all my life with the Sisk Group and spent the last ten years as managing director of the Stone Developments company. I was chairman of the track in Kilkenny and was also heavily involved in the coursing side of things.

“All of those experiences will be a huge help in this new role.”

So what will be on Meaney’s to do list when he sits down for his first day?

“Up until this week the greyhound industry was just a pasttime for me. From today on it is much more serious.

“I plan to go to the Limerick headquarters for a few days and see where we are with regards different projects, finances and the like. I can’t really say too much at the moment as I haven’t looked at all the facts and figures. I am not going to comment specifically on the issue of exports to China until I know more but I do believe that the greyhound industry — and indeed all industries in this country — need to be looking at how they can increase their export potential.”

The Irish Coursing Club executive member continued: “Prize money is another issue that concerns me. Prize money has been eroded over the last number of years.

“That is something which I will be keen to address. There are other things like capital projects which will be looked at down the line as well.

“It is exciting and challenging. When I was offered the job I was very excited.

“But in the cold light of day I realise just how challenging the task will be.”

But Meaney has not doubt about his biggest strength. “One thing will be unity of purpose. I often feel that we in Ireland fight with ourselves. I hope to bring a bit of leadership to the sport.

“What I will say is that I don’t have all the answers. But I am not afraid to listen and learn.”
