Chaos a rare debutant juvenile winner for Lynam

JOHNNY Murtagh, who will partner Dylan Thomas in today’s ‘King George’ at Ascot, was on the mark at Fairyhouse last night, scoring on debutant Capt Chaos in the Book Tickets Online Median Auction 2-Y-0 Maiden.

Chaos a rare debutant juvenile winner for Lynam

Winning trainer Eddie Lynam admitted: “That’s a bit of a surprise. It’s yonks since we had a first-time-out two-year-old winner.”

Capt Chaos, a son of Captain Rio owned by Richie Behan, quickened clear to slam the luckless Princess Zoe. And Lynam added: “I thought he’d be a nice early type, but he got a bang on his hock and had to be given a break. I suppose he’ll have to step into listed class. He’s in the £300,000 St.Leger Yearling Sales Race at York on August 23.”

Chris Hayes got out of jail on favourite Extraterrestrial to win the featured Racecard Advertising At Fairyhouse Race for Kevin Prendergast and Lady O’Reilly.

Boxed-in on the rail in the straight, in a five-horse race, the favourite, blinkered for the first time, wore down Fly Free inside the final furlong to triumph in a three-way photo-finish.

And the dual champion apprentice completed a double when landing the finale, the Live Music After Racing Handicap on the Paul McEnery-trained Romarca, binging Hayes’ seasonal tally to 23.

Pat Smullen, out of luck on Fly Free and, later, on Instant Sparkle, recorded his 49th win of the season when Subtle Shimmer narrowly outpointed dead-heaters Lucky Kyllachy and Killer Looks in the Fairyhouse Corporate Hospitality Handicap, prompting trainer Dermot Weld to describe the performance as “brave and battling”.

The Last Stand, which made all in the colours of Cathal McCarthy to land the Club Fundraising Events Handicap, will carry his mandatory penalty in a mile and a half handicap at Galway on Wednesday.

Under an enterprising ride from Fran Berry, the five-year-old defied an 11lb. rise following his victory last time at Clonmel to beat Haiban. Trainer Tony Mullins said: “He’s starting to get his act together on the flat and will head for Galway on Wednesday.”

Kevin Manning partnered Halla Siamsa to win the Irish Stallion Farms Fillies Maiden for Jim Bolger, a result confirmed after a Stewards Enquiry and the second leg of an across-the-card double for the Coolcullen-based trainer, initiated by Trachonitis in the Paddy McGee (Wexford) Ltd. At Wexford.

Confidently handled by Davy Moran, Trachonitis was travelling smoothly and tackling Cru when he stumbled slightly turning for home before coasting through to record an emphatic victory.

Riding honours at Wexford went to claimer Shane Jackson who completed a fine double on Rosoff and Hard To Handle.

Rosoff, trained by Philip Rothwell. foiled the Tony Martin-trained favourite Equator in the Value Centre Cash & Carry Handicap Hurdle, staying on well after the favourite ‘missed’ the final flight.

Jackson completed his double when Hard To Handle, trained by Michael Cunningham and carrying the famous colours of Herb Stanley, gained a long overdue victory in the Martinstown Opportunity Handicap Chase.

Earlier, Barry Geraghty recorded his second win since returning after a broken wrist when Quartino, trained by Jessica Harrington, justified odds-on favouritism in the Talbot Hotel Maiden Hurdle. The winner is likely to run on the flat at Galway next week.
