Sri Lanka set one-day record

SRI LANKA capped a fine summer by breaking the world record for a one-day international total, posting 443 for nine against the Netherlands in Amstelveen.

Mahela Jayawardene’s side, who recently whitewashed England 5-0 in the NatWest Series, topped the 438 for nine South Africa made against Australia in Johannesburg three months ago.

Dilhara Fernando picked up three wickets for 39 today as the hosts were bowled out for 248, with Sri Lanka sealing a 195-run win.

Tillekeratne Dilshan remained unbeaten on 117 during the record-breaking innings – — while Sanath Jayasuriya struck 157 off 104 balls, taking his tally past 300 in his last two innings following his 152 at Headingley on Saturday.

During their run chase against England at the weekend, Sri Lanka had reached 324 for two off 37.3 overs – meaning South Africa’s record total could have been under threat had they been batting first.

Sri Lanka’s bid for a quick victory was held up by Tim de Leede’s 51 off 43 balls, while Alexei Kervezee added 47 before he became one of three victims for Kaushal Lokuarachchi.

Since losing the second Test to England at Edgbaston, Jayawardene’s inexperienced squad have been on a roll – sharing the Test series with victory at Trent Bridge then winning five out of five one-dayers.
