There’s a great quote attributed to the American writer Maya Angelou that says, “People will forget the things you do, and people will forget the things you say. But people will never forget how you made them feel.” It was cited by a contributor to the recent RTÉ documentary on DJ Carey, who was reminiscing on the now convicted fraudster’s remarkable hurling career.

That quote came to mind when, as so many migrants do, I had to tune in online to a funeral from home of a neighbour, and GAA club stalwart. You could only ever smile when you thought of Denis Kennedy, perched on his bench at the hurling field or in his kitchen chair, papers and books strewn around him.
