17-year-old found guilty of murdering postman Barry Daly in Cork

The teenager was convicted following a retrial after the first jury failed to reach a verdict on the murder charge

A 17-year-old has been found guilty of the murder of 44-year-old postman Barry Daly in the front garden of his home in Doneraile.

The unanimous verdict was returned by a jury of seven women and five men at the Central Criminal Court, sitting in Cork, at 2.15pm on Wednesday, following seven hours and 29 minutes of deliberations.

The teenager had pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter.

The retrial began shortly after the conclusion of an earlier trial, which commenced on June 3 before a different jury.

In that trial, Alex Deady, 20, of Glenview, Convent Road, Doneraile, Co Cork, was convicted of the murder of Barry Daly.

A 16-year-old co-accused was convicted of manslaughter, having entered a guilty plea to that charge.

The 17-year-old, who admitted manslaughter but denied murder, was also tried during the first proceedings. However, the jury was unable to reach a verdict on the murder charge against him.

At the retrial, the second jury unanimously found him guilty of murder.
