There are a select few moments in sport when you can’t believe what you’ve just read or heard. Where you think it’s a wind-up. Or that your source has been the victim of one. When you and everyone else simply couldn’t see it coming.
Within a couple of hours of the news breaking from Dallas and Los Angeles in the early hours of Sunday morning, the brilliant NBA journalist Zach Lowe proclaimed that about the only other sports event that he could compare it to was upon learning that an unknown journeyman called Buster Douglas had knocked down and beaten Mike Tyson in Tokyo. You simply had to be alive in February 1990, he’d elaborate, to appreciate just how incredulous that was at the time.
