DOOMED: Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reacts during the Premier League against West Ham. Picture: John Walton/PA Wire.

Although Erik Ten Hag at Old Trafford served up some good to go with all the bad and the ugly, it long seemed inevitable that like in the film of that name, INEOS were going to tell him to step aside as Clint Eastwood does a bounty collector and coolly and cruelly inform him, “You don’t look like the one who’ll collect it.”

True, Ten Hag collected some bounty over his 30 months in the gig. A League Cup in his first season, and a glorious against-the-head FA Cup in his second. But that wasn’t the kind of prize he was commissioned to deliver. His job was to get back Manchester United back in the pursuit of league titles and increasingly he cut the look of a man who never could or would.
