AND so, with two expert examples of his penalty box craft, Harry Kane helped Bayern Munich into the Champions League quarter-finals and kept the jokes about his trophyless tendencies on ice for another few weeks at least.

How they would have laughed had Bayern stumbled out of the competition on Tuesday night and almost certainly confirmed a first season without a bit of tin since 2011-12. Not content with having led Tottenham through a barren decade of jilted dreams and helped England come so-near-yet-so-far on several occasions, Kane was now, so to speak, bringing his particular talents to Bavaria.
