If there is one, unifying concept upon which the modern Christmas hangs then it is the proliferation of stuff that we don’t really need.

Whether it is food, presents or relatives, most of our lives in the next week or so will be filled with things we could easily be doing without. Brussels sprouts, Baileys for breakfast, socialising with work colleagues – what is unpalatable for 11 months is somehow acceptable in December.
