Those fond of clunky metaphors will have noted the recent story about the launch of TGL – the new indoor, showbiz-adjacent golf event backed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy – being delayed for at least a year because the roof of the arena fell in.

A power failure caused the collapse of the air-supported dome at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, intended venue for the latest in golf’s dizzying whirl of gimmicky formats. But the sense of the sport’s old structures tumbling down has dominated the past few years of Saudi-influenced turmoil.
