Cody leaves final door open for Shefflin

Kilkenny have a clean bill of health ahead of the All-Ireland SHC final replay, according to manager Brian Cody, who was circumspect about Henry Shefflin’s chances of starting the game against Tipperary.

Cody leaves final door open for Shefflin

Shefflin is hunting an unprecedented 10th All-Ireland senior hurling medal but only featured in the closing minutes of the drawn game.

“We just have a few niggles, run of the mill stuff, we’re fine injury-wise so far,” said Cody.

“Obviously there’s huge media concentration on Henry because of the situation he’s in, because of what he’s done over a huge career.

“Everyone speculates about what could happen and all the rest of it.

“It’s not about that for us, and it never has been. The panel is there and we just work away as we always have done. There’s no pressure from within on any player in the panel, whether he starts or not.”

Cody pointed out that the three weeks before the replay may not yield much preparation time for Shefflin. “The three extra weeks may be only three short training sessions, in reality, and the opportunity is there for all players to impress or to put themselves in the frame.

“Is he in the frame? Of course he’s in the frame. The decisions will be made, and everyone knows a lot of the players who will start, personnel-wise, position-wise who knows?

“Everyone will be speculating about the make-up of the team, but it’ll be picked on what we see, as I said.”

Kilkenny will pick their team on Thursday, September 25.
